The Medico-Legal & Ethical Advisory Division of JIM Medico (Pvt) Ltd stands as Sri Lanka’s first comprehensive service that unites the disciplines of law, medicine, and ethics under one collaborative framework. This division was established to address the increasing need for professional guidance at the intersection of healthcare delivery and legal responsibility — a space that has long remained misunderstood and underrepresented in Sri Lanka.

In developed nations such as the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia, medico-legal practice is recognized as a cornerstone of healthcare justice. Doctors, patients, hospitals, and insurance companies regularly engage expert medico-legal consultants to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability. Yet, in Sri Lanka and other developing regions, this vital connection between healthcare and law remains weak. Many patients are unaware of their rights, while medical professionals often lack legal support when facing complaints, disciplinary actions, or litigation.

Recognizing this urgent gap, **Dr. Jerish Neeraj** — a qualified medical doctor, biomedical engineer, legal professional, and PhD holder in Medical Law & Ethics — founded this division to serve as a bridge between clinical reality and legal justice. He envisioned a system where patients, doctors, and hospitals could find balanced, ethical, and scientifically sound solutions to disputes — without fear, bias, or harm to reputation.

Today, this division serves as the leading medico-legal entity in Sri Lanka, providing expert consultation, legal defense, and ethical evaluation for medical, surgical, and healthcare-related disputes. Our mission is simple yet powerful — to protect rights, uphold ethics, and deliver justice within the medical system.

1. Legal Representation and Court Advocacy

   Our legal team consists of senior Attorneys-at-Law with more than 20 years of active court experience, handling both civil and criminal healthcare cases across Sri Lanka. We represent:

   We assist hospitals and medical institutions to remain compliant with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) regulations, the Private Medical Institutions Act (No. 21 of 2006), and Penal Code provisions on medical negligence. Our team drafts ethical SOPs, consent forms, and patient charters aligned with WHO and UNESCO Bioethics Guidelines.

5. Forensic Medicine & Expert Testimony

   Our Government Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) with an MD in Forensic Medicine provides expert opinions for postmortems, injury interpretation, and criminal medical cases. These reports meet both SLMC and court standards.

6. International and Cross-Border Medical Consultation

   We collaborate with international experts including a Nepali-registered robotic surgeon (PhD in Uro-Oncology) who provides teleconsultations for prostate, kidney, and surgical advisory cases. This service enables global-standard opinions for both Sri Lankan and diaspora patients.

7. Policy, Risk, and Ethics Training for Healthcare Institutions

   We conduct medico-legal awareness programs for hospitals, universities, and health professionals. These cover documentation, consent law, patient rights, and ethical conduct, promoting legal safety and professionalism across the healthcare sector.
